About This Book
This is the first novel by Pyeon Hyeyeong, who has revealed a unique
world where she portrays the savagery of everyday life with cruel
images. It recounts the story of a man who, as a staff member of a
pharmaceutical company, is dispatched to the country of C for his
ability to catch mice, only to be hunted down on charges of having
killed his wife and to end up working as a temporary epidemic prevention
staff member in charge of catching mice. Ashes and Red, which
meticulously exposes the dark side of modern civilization such as the
loss of humanity in extreme circumstances and absolute isolation caused
by an absence of communication through the author’s brand of grotesque
imagination and tight prose, can be seen as the definitive version of
the world recreated by the author in two earlier short story
collections. Although full of apocalyptic and uncanny elements in an
unrealistic and hypothetical situation, this volume confirms the power
of well-made fiction in tensely and tenaciously pursuing the theme of
realistic empathy.
