About This Book
Pierre Lemaitre was awarded the 2013 Prix Goncourt award for this novel. While most Prix Goncourt titles sell an average of 400,000 copies, Au revoir là-haut has sold more than 1 million copies.
The plot takes place a few days before the end of World War I. Lieutenant Henry D'Aulnay-Pradelle purposely kills two of his own soldiers in order to turn his French soldiers against the opposing German soldiers. One of Pradelle’s other soldiers, Albert Maillard, comes across the two bodies and finds out that their deaths were framed. Pradelle buries Maillard, who is later rescued by fellow solider, Edouard Péricourt. Péricourt’s face becomes severely deformed when he takes a bullet to the face in the process of rescuing Maillard. After the war, forgotten veterans Maillard and Péricourt have no choice but to change their identities and struggle to make ends meet.
