About This Book
Hwang Sok-yong worked on this roman-fleuve for ten years. Jangkilsan
is acclaimed as one of the most outstanding historical novels in Korea. A
masterpiece that has long been read by people of all ages, it is still beloved
by great numbers of readers despite the fact that it came out 20 years ago. It
has sold more than three million copies, and deserves to be honored as a
monumental saga that represents Korean literary history.
Written on a grand scale, this novel is a masterpiece in which are engraved the
life and death of the people of the 17th century Chosun dynasty, along with
yearning for a new world that persistently existed in the form of the Maitreya
belief. The novel is set in the fields and mountains of the late Chosun dynasty
in the period of Sook-jong(the 19th king). Its main character is Jangkilsan, who
existed during that period. He represents the undaunted life force of common
people and the valiance of many heroes. Born of a humble, runaway servant,
Jankilsan struggles to overcome social contradictions. He takes a group of
vicious merchants to court and rebels against the ruling class by organizing the
Noklim party. His personal efforts motivate merchants everywhere, and men from
all over the country join him in fulfilling his long-cherished dream of
empowering the oppressed.
With verisimilitude, the writer portrays Jangkilsan’s gangs as they take all the
crops and valuables from the rich and distribute them to the downtrodden.
Jankilsan’s tender love for Myo-ok, along with the valor of the heroes, stirs
readers’ mind.
The grand story is described with a highly realistic touch. The story includes
chivalrous bouts of people in the Korean peninsular and the history of
lower-class people who overcome their personal grudges and self-interest, while
longing for a new world. There is also a moving human drama that richly
describes the love between Jangkilsan and Myo-ok and between Wonhyang and the
monk, Yeohwan.
