About This Book
Sociologist Kim Ho-gi and historian Park Tae-kyun shed light on and evaluate 40 controversies that shook modern Korean history from 1945 to 2018. There are three criteria for selecting an argument. The first is the debate on events and discourses that have had a decisive impact on social development. The second is the debate between conservatives and progressives. The third is a debate of great present significance. The contemporary Korean history and controversies covered in this book are by no means past history. We still live under that influence, and the debate is still ongoing.
The first part of the book tracks the creation of time and space in modern Korea by examining the debates related to liberation, the establishment of government, and the formation of a division system. In the second part, we look back on the arguments containing the light and shadow of the Park Chung-hee era, and politics at the time that still affects Korean society.Reflect on the framework of diplomacy, culture, and economy.
In the third part, we look at the debates that signal the opening and progress of the era of democratization. It analyzes from the truth battle of the Gwangju Uprising to the debate over civil society and civil movement that led to democratization. Part 4 focuses on the debates that show Korean society after the 1997 financial crisis. Readers will be interested in that the debates that make up the fourth part are the issues that make up the present in our society. In some cases, it may be possible to sympathize sharply or present an issue from the opposite position.
