About This Book
The Korea Foundation is most pleased and gratified to present "Eternal
Images of Sakyamuni," an English-language catalogue, to introduce the
Gilt-Bronze Pensive Images (National Treasures of Korea No. 78 and No.
83), two masterpieces of Korea's Buddhist cultural and artistic
heritage. Even today, after passage of more than a millennium, the
magnificent artistry of these world renowned images continue to attract
keen attention, while serving as a window into the spiritual world of
the Korean people of long ago. Since its introduction to the Korean
Peninsula in the late fourth century, Buddhism has left an indelible
imprint on the thought and culture of the people of Korea. In this
regard, the two Buddhist sculptures, believed to be created in the sixth
to seventh century, provide a meaningful glimpse of the everyday life
and culture of ancient Korean Society. Although both works are products
of the late Three Kingdoms Period, they feature distinctive
characteristics in terms of artistic style and form, as a result of the
elapsed time between the dates of their completion. For an in-depth
appreciation of the pensive images, the catalog includes about 100 photo
images and illustrations of the two sculptures, along with detailed
comparisons. In addition, there are also two essays by art historians
that provide readers with commentary from a scholarly perspective. The
Korea Foundation is grateful for the invaluable contributions and
diligent efforts of the publication participants, whose assistance and
patience have made possible the fruition of this endeavor. In
particular, the value of this catalog has been substantially enhanced
through the cooperation of The National Museum of Korea, which
authorized the taking of additional photos to better illustratevarios
detail discussed in the contents.
