About This Book
The Flowering Whale sensitively depicts the process through which an
individual overcomes a devastating loss and the consequent reversal of
fortune by illustrating the relationships between Nieun, a
seventeen-year-old who has lost both of her parents in a car accident,
and those around her. As such, it weaves a narrative of empathy and
solidarity among the protagonist, an old whaler who has been banned from
following his cherished and lifelong trade, a septuagenarian who strives
to take care of all living beings despite and because of the loss of her
husband and children, and other adolescent girls who endeavor to chart
their lives regardless of the dictates of society. In the end, just as
the long-awaited whales return, the heroine takes a step beyond her own
sorrows, encouraged and spurred by the wistful yet undeniable warmth
among people. By creating a work that simultaneously awakens the child
in each reader and presents a story of loss and triumph over it in
conjunction with the archetypal and mythical world that the myth of
development and success has bereft us moderns of, the author has
pioneered a new territory in modern South Korean fiction indeed.
