About This Book
Human Acts is author Han Gang’s 6th novel. Using May 1980 as the general plot, she offers readers a chance to reconsider the past in a new light. While many may have forgotten about the past, there are some who are still traumatized by the Gwanju Uprising of May 18th, 1980.
Han narrates parts of the story in six different perspectives. Dong-Ho, a middle school student at the time of the uprising, is one of the many characters’ voices. Using the traumatic experiences of her characters, the author redirects our attention to the horrendous events in hopes of keeping it historically relevant.
At the time of the uprising, Dong Ho is attending his third year of middle school. Dong Ho and his friend, Jung Dae, actively participate in the Gwangju Uprising. Unfortunately, Jung Dae is hit by of the police officers and is killed at a young age. Devastated, Dong Ho joins a task force responsible for handling the numerous corpses following the uprising. Upon witnessing 15 corpses of children his age, he lights candles for their now-quiet souls.
This novel follows the before and after lives of Dong Ho and the elders he works alongside after the incident of May 18, 1980.
