About This Book
This story captures the youth of Grandma Suni, who was discovered on a small island in the Philippines after 70 years of being away from her homeland. The author began writing with the intention of preserving the stories of our ancestors—our mothers' mothers, fathers' fathers—who endured a time when our country was under Japanese rule, poor, and oppressed. What started as a twenty-page story on A4 paper turned into a decade-long writing journey, during which the author faced setbacks such as data loss, a loss of motivation, and the need to repeatedly revisit the story from scratch. Ultimately, the novel was completed as a lyrical and beautiful work grounded in authenticity and fact.
The story is set in the 1930s in a village at the foot of Mount Baekdu, known as Tiger Village. It features a tiger hunter, Yong-i, who, along with his father, comes to the village seeking revenge against a white tiger that harmed his mother and younger sibling. Also featured are Suni, the granddaughter of the village chief, and Kazuo, a Japanese army officer and former art student. The story follows the pure-hearted youths of that era, who, despite the despair they face in the whirlwind of history, maintain their faith, love, and devotion towards one another, making passionate choices through a time of turmoil.
The author skillfully unpacks the themes of "love, forgiveness, and reconciliation" with a thoughtful and warm perspective, while maintaining a fast-paced, dense narrative focused on the three protagonists. Moreover, the meticulous attention to detail in scene construction and the beautifully depicted landscape of the Baekdu Mountain village make the novel feel like a living, breathing film, providing another meaningful literary achievement.
