About This Book
This volume is the eleventh collection of short fiction by Sung Suk-je,
who has built a world of unique novelistic entertainment and satire.
Indeed, without his works, which both amuse and instruct, the humdrum
routines of us moderns would be barely tolerable. The main theme running
through this collection is addiction. In depicting with his sly humor
people who are addicted to diverse objects including tears, drugs,
alcohol, amnesia, and laughter, the author presents to readers pure
entertainment and a speedy read. Such laughter, however, is based on
warmth and love of humanity instead of braggadocio and exaggeration,
thus prompting readers to be teary with laughter and to be somber and
sad in turn. For, in the end, notwithstanding the diversity of
characters with addictions portrayed in this volume, it is the reader
who is truly addicted.
