About This DVD
The buzzword for Summer 2003 is horror. After the success of The Phone in summer
2002, the formerly minor genre of horror has become a major force in the Korean
film industry. Curious to see whether Korean cinema can overcome its first
generation of horror films, characterized by simple narratives, pots of blood,
and blood-curdling screams, the film industry and ordinary audiences have
awaited the new films of 2003 with great anticipation. As such, Into the Mirror
stands out among the Korean horror lineup of 2003 for its particular character.
"Forget the ghosts who jump out at you without notice, don't you have anything
truly frightening? The most frightening thing of all is inside yourself." Taking
the horror film into new directions, Into the Mirror proves that the most basic
fear is centered around the self, which we know and trust more than anything
else. Into the Mirror shows us the true nature of "Mirror Horror" by revealing
the mysterious and creepy side of something which we have lived with all our
lives.
Having parted with an unforgettable gaze and the question - 'How can love
change?' (One Fine Spring Day), YU Ji-tae now returns. After having being absent
from the screen for two years, YU comes back with a completely different image
and look. One can see the interest by film industry people and audiences in YU
Ji-tae in the fact that he stars in three films which will be debuting in the
second half of 2003. An actor always to keep people guessing, YU's first
appearance of the year in Into the Mirror is sure not to disappoint audiences.
During casting, director KIM Sung-ho traveled to Japan, where YU Ji-tae was
temporarily staying, in order to show him the screenplay. The two then discussed
and analyzed the role in detail. At the time of this meeting, YU had been giving
long and serious thought to which role he should play next, and the discussions
he had with the director allowed him to make his choice. YU's deep and
distinctive voice will bring forth a hidden and elemental horror in people's
hearts with Into the Mirror.
From the screenplay stage, Into the Mirror drew forth great interest from
production and investment companies when it took part in the Pusan Promotion
Plan's New Directors In Focus (NDIF), a project market designed for new
directors with an independent vision. The film became the first feature to be
produced by Key+ Pictures, which showed a confidence in the idea and chose it
over other more conventional commercial projects. New director KIM Sung-ho,
though long periods of research and effort, has created a film whose distinctive
topic and themes have yet to be seen in Korean cinema. An architecture major who
later fell love with cinema, this new director has already in his short films
displayed a certain affinity with the "world inside the mirror." With Cinema
Service signing on to finance and distribute the film, and with the #1 star YU
Ji-tae in the film's lead, the anticipation surrounding this film is very high.
The veil is now being drawn on this project for which everyone provided their
effort.
