About This Book

In the stories of Korean Americans, their hardships and victories are intertwined in various ways. From the colonial period under Japanese rule to the Korean War in 1950, Korean Americans experienced and endured countless pains, endured, and overcame trials without ever giving up.
The immigration of Koreans to the U.S. has increased dramatically since the revised Immigration Act of 1965. This revised law has made it easier for more Koreans, and other Asians, to migrate to the U.S. From 350,000 in the 1980s, the number of immigrants to the U.S. increased to 1.7 million in 2010.
However, Koreans living in the U.S. had a hard time adjusting to American society due to language barriers and cultural differences, and because of racial discrimination, they could only do small businesses such as liquor stores, wig shops, grocery stores, and gas stations. They became victims of the 1992 Los Angeles riots. The riots comparatively shocked Korean American communities, caused property damage and trials, but at the same time became an important lesson for them to learn and start rising again. After the L.A. riots, Koreans in the U.S. began to speak up, participate in politics, contribute to the Korean community, and seek solidarity with other races. Koreans in the U.S. no longer have "guests" in the country, but rather have a sense of ownership as Koreans in the U.S.
Now, Koreans are beginning to realize that they are a part of the mainstream in American culture. In the 2000s, Korean food and culture in the United States were gaining popularity through the Korean Wave. Despite the history of constant suffering, Koreans in the United States have become businessmen, citizens, teachers, lawyers, social activists, and war heroes in various fields. In order to properly understand the history of Koreans in the United States, we must pay attention to the people and heroes who made this minority community the shape of today's Korean society.
Who is Korean American, or Korean American? If you do not know your history, you cannot know who you are. This is because the history of Korean Americans is absolutely important to establish Korean American identity. Only when you know your roots can you grow into a proud Korean American and actively participate in community activities. I hope this book will be the first step in establishing the identity of Korean Americans.
