About This Book
Edited by Korean National Commission for UNESCO, this volume is a compilation of
articles in the field of Korean philosophy that have been previously published
in journals and noted for their academic value. Articles in this book cover the
major trends in Korean philosophy, the reformulation of traditional
philosophical thought in response to modernity, and the significance of
traditional Korean philosophy in the present day. This volume provides the
reader with a great deal of information on the past, present, and future of the
field with much emphasis placed on Confucianism and Buddhism. The major tenets
of Confucianism and Buddhism were topics of interest in Korean intellectual
circles, especially the transformation of both with the oncoming of modernity.
This book is composed of "General introduction," "Confucianism and Its Modern
Impact," "The Spirit of Korean Buddhism," "Practical Learning" (or commonly
called "silhak"), and lastly "Korean Philosophy in the Era of Imperialism and
Modernization." Noted essays introduced here deal with traditional and modern
philosophy, the developmental patterns of Korean thought reexamined in the
social context, Confucianism and its modern transformation in East Asia,
Confucianism and democracy in East Asia, Buddhism in modern Korea, Ham
Seok-heon's national spirit and Christian thought. The book examines the wisdom,
values and ideological thought intrinsic to Korean culture. This book will serve
as a useful guide to Korean philosophy and thought for readers interested in
Korean Studies.
