About This Book
This book is a compilation of all available updated data regarding
taekwondo - Korea's national martial art - focusing on the scientific
analysis of theories as well as the three-dimensional illustrations of
major physical motions. As an updated and revised edition of the
taekwondo manual originally published in 1975, it stresses the aspect of
spiritual enrichment so that a taekwondo practitioner may cultivate a
noble integrated character in him- or herself. The compilation was
especially focused on: 1) laying more emphasis on the field of spiritual
education, as well as the establishment of a more rationalized
historical view of the martial art 2) improving the state of technical
terminology through academic research and 3) facilitating instruction
and practice by giving detailed three-dimensional illustrations of
movements in accordance with the exact techniques and skills of basic
forms called "pumsae," among others. The book is composed of five
chapters each devoted to the history, basic instructions, basic motions
(including attack techniques), pumsae (or forms), and gyeorugi [free
sparring] as well as competition rules and prevention of injuries.
