About This Book
Written by one of the greatest figures in modern Korean literature, Ch'ae Man-shik
(1902-1950), this collection contains three of his finest short stories,
including his masterpiece "A Ready-made Life (Redi-meideu insaeng)." His
penetrating mind, command of idioms, highly realistic dialogue and keen wit
produced his unique style of fiction. The immediacy of the narrative makes the
readers feel as if they are actually in the presence of the storyteller. One of
the three entries, "My Innocent Uncle" satirizes idealistic Korean socialists as
well as opportunistic Koreans who collaborated with the Japanese colonialists.
Originally serialized in the magazine Shindong-a from May to July 1934, "A
Ready-made Life" concerns the plight of young unemployed intellectuals who
perpetually make the rounds of publishing houses, pawnshops and cheap bars in a
colonized society. "Once upon a Paddy" suggests that Korean peasants under the
Japanese colonial rule were no worse off than they were during the Joseon
Dynasty (1392-1910).
