"My Mother Never Dies" is an autobiographical novel based on author Choi, In-ho's personal memory of his mother. This story starts from the year when his mother was 68. As the author is nearing the same age, he regrets having failed to understand and respect his mother fully during her life. Comparing the pure and innocent appearance of the mother at her wedding to the tough and hard life she had lived thereafter, he realized harsh poverty makes her an unyielding and dogged woman who he hated and was ashamed of. He now confesses that his mother's love and sacrifice has made him what he is today. The book is an essay rather than a novel, further attracting readers to realize the importance of family love and affection for mother.
Acclaimed for his unique writing style catering to urban life, Choi was one of the leading writers in the 1970s. Starting to publish serial stories at the age of 28 at the Chosun Ilbo, Choi has been a successful author labeled as 'the youngest novelist contributing stories periodically on a newspaper' and 'the author whose works shot as films are the most'. He mainly described an individual whose life is disturbed and distorted by the Korea's historical and social ups and downs.
