Young master Kim Ae-ran, a new full-length novel after 13 years
. A new full-length novel by young master Kim Ae-ran, who has created a decisive moment in Korean literature. In an interview a few years ago, when asked about her next work, the author explained that it would be “a story about light, lies, and pictures.” Everything about this work, which had been kept under wraps except for this, has finally been released after a long wait. Kim Ae-ran, who began her career in 2002 and is now in her 23rd year as a writer, has been developing her world of works with careful steps, and has published four short story collections and one full-length novel so far. However, all five books are still widely read and have a rare vitality that brings to mind unique scenes for each of us just by their titles. From 『Run, Dad』(Changbi, 2005) that runs forward with lively humor and imagination to 『Outside is Summer』(Munhakdongne, 2017) that captures the time difference between ‘inside and outside’ while deeply looking at the conditions of life surrounding us, each book contains the results of understanding that was obtained with difficulty by moving little by little without stopping in one place.
『One of These is a Lie』 is the story of three high school sophomores who become aware of each other for the first time through several coincidental events, gradually become close, and go through an unforgettable vacation. The time period mainly covered in the novel is a short vacation of about two months, but through the unique structure in which the truth is gradually revealed as we go back and forth between the three children’s perspectives, we experience the characters’ battles that have led up to the present in their entirety. This may be why this short novel feels so expansive. After much thought on the question of “what to say and how to say it,” “One of These is a Lie” is completed, and in the end, it movingly suggests how the concerns about the structure of the novel are connected to the understanding of the characters. Just as “a very small amount of white paint” (p. 195) must be applied to “the tip of the brush when engraving light into someone’s eyes,” like “a small amount but something absolutely necessary to express someone’s soul,” Kim Ae-ran portrays someone’s soul, or the multifaceted and multilayered life of a character that can never be summarized in a trite way, through her characteristically concise and lingering sentences.
