About This Book
Kim Yu-na's Coach Publishes Skating Memoirs
Two-time Olympic silver
medalist in men's figure skating Brian Orser, now the coach of 2009
World Figure Skating champion Kim Yu-na, has published his
autobiography, titled "One Thousand Jumps for One Leap." Orser won
silver in the 1984 and 1988 Winter Olympics, and the 1987 World
Championship. In the book, he describes how his life story evolved
around figure skating, and his relationship with Kim over the last three
years.
When they first met in Toronto in May 2006, Orser realized Kim was a
diamond in the rough waiting to be polished. He says Kim's body moves so
naturally to the music that it looks easy, but in case anybody thinks
her success is due to God-given talent, he recommends they watch Kim
practice for three days. His protégée's only flaw, he adds, is that she
is too much of a perfectionist and practices too hard sometimes. At
times, she gets excessively nervous under pressure and cries, and on
such occasions Orser says he simply lets her weep all she wants.
Now preparing for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Orser says he
wants Yu-na to enjoy the Olympics to the fullest and have a long
competitive career, believing as he does that she is a trailblazer who
is rewriting the history of women's figure skating.
