"Paper Meal," written by KIM Jung-mi, is a children's story that treats the weak and poor with compassion. In the story, a brother and sister named Cheoli and Songi, are living with their grandparents in a board shack. When Cheoli goes to school, Songi is left to play by herself in the locked room. She amuses herself by playing a game called "paper meal," where she chews paper as if chewing gum. Though she looks forward to entering elementary school, Songi is sent to a temple, since caring for both children and the ailing grandfather is too much for the grandmother. This is a moving story of a family which cannot help being split apart because of their poverty. Despite their difficult situation, however, they never give up each other. The author delicately describes the characters' positive way of life, keeping their hopes up in times of destitution. The author also presents a similar view in another book entitled "Children of Gwaengiburimal," which reveals her warmth towards the weak, the alienated, and the unknown. Although the book is shorter and simpler than "Paper Meal," the lasting impression is just as great.
