About This Book

Description "Thr Power and The Glory" (played by Kim Yeon-soo, Open Books) is the masterpiece of Graham Greene (1904–1991), a British Catholic novelist. The background of the novel is a Mexican state ruled by an anti-Catholic governor in the 1930s. The protagonist is chased by the authorities that persecute Catholics. He is the only priest left in the region standing by believers, with freedom of faith disappearing and other priests executed, fled, or baptized. He may sound like an exemplary priest with deep devotion, but he is a fallen priest who is an alcoholic and has a child. However, all such depravity happened after heroic choice of staying by believers

Graham Greene, a master of unique imaginative worlds and thrilling narratives, and also a profound thinker on the relationship between human existence and divine faith, is known for his seminal work "The Power and the Glory." This novel, now translated into Korean by the Novelist Kim Yeon-su, was born out of Greene’s journey through Mexico. It delves into the themes of political and religious conflict and perpetually questions the transcendence of faith through the story of a fallen priest.

The phrase "I hope to be arrested soon… I hope to be arrested soon…" echoes a prayer reminiscent of Jesus' Gethsemane plea, and it belongs to a disgraced priest. During a period of military revolution in Mexico, where priests were forced to marry or face execution, the ‘whiskey priest’—a fugitive and lawbreaker—navigates through his profound solitude. His despair drives him to seek out forbidden alcohol, and his turmoil is heightened by the existence of his illegitimate daughter.

Endlessly pursued, the whiskey priest provides sacraments to some and is betrayed by others. His path diverges starkly from the conventional image of a saintly martyr. Despite his torment over a life of corruption and his longing for his illegitimate daughter, he eventually turns his steps towards the darkness he faces, moving towards the very heart of the obscurity that chases him.
