About This Book
Renowned for his persistent depiction of the traumatic effects of the Japanese
colonial rule and the Korean War, seasoned writer Lee Hochol vividly depicts the
lives of ordinary folks who embrace the pain and anguish of modern Korean
history with forgiveness and reconciliation in this collection of nine stories
including “Separation Blues, Family Blues” and “Unlawful, Illegal, Legal.” The
title story concerns separation from and reunion with family members and the
complex and subtle distortions that such events cause to family relationships.
Immediately after Japan’s defeat and the consequent Liberation, a Korean couple
living in China temporarily places their young eldest son in the care of a young
widow and return to southern Korea amidst chaos. When the widow fails to board
the next ship headed for Korea, however, they are unwittingly separated from
their son. After years of search, the couple, who now lives in Canada,
dramatically discovers that their son is alive in North Korea. A moving family
reunion ensues, thirty years overdue. The reunion between the couple and the
widow who disappeared with their son years ago is both interesting and
thought-provoking.
