About This Book
Compiled and translated from English to Korean by Kim Yong-cheol;
illustrated by Kim Eun-jung. Surprise: 224 pp., 12,500 won
Kim, a former professor who taught English literature for 25 years, has
created a collection of carefully selected English poems. Each piece is
accompanied by a Korean translation and footnotes for vocabulary, as
well as delicately rendered color pencil drawings.
Featured are works by not only famous poets including William
Wordsworth, Christina Rossetti, Robert Frost and Langston Hughes, but
also by writers who are less known in Korea such as Louis Untermeyer. An
audio CD of poetry readings by native English speakers is included.
This book would be of vital interest for students learning English, but
it offers much more than what one would learn in an English literature
class, and provides messages of hope, beauty and life for readers of all
ages.
"I've read most of these poems before, but Kim's perspective in his
translations and comments gave me the pleasure of savoring them as new
treasures. This book reveals the limitless depth and richness of
poetry," said John Holstein, professor at Sungkyunlwan University.
