About This Book
The formal beauty of the roof in Korean traditional architecture lies in
the lines of the roof eaves. This book shows various themes and meanings
imbued in Korean traditional rooflines. They are silence, sublimity,
truth and nature. In particular, the rooflines described here are
characterized as "Korean lines" which can be described as curvilinear or
organic. This unique Korean line, which is referred to as "seon", is
found in all genres of Korean traditional art. It is embedded in the
minds of the Korean people and existed even before the creation of art.
"Seon" was always an important element of the Korean spirit and was
applied as a formal term in artistic genres. By appreciating various
aspects of Korean roofs included in this book, readers will be able to
absorb the roofs' virtues into their lives. Yim Seock-jae, the author of
this book, is a professor of architecture at Ewha Women's University and
has written extensively about architecture.
