About This Book
It was written by Tim O'Brien, an American book award-winning author who experienced the Vietnam War in personally. As a autobiographical novel that reflects the writer's own experiences and memories, the main character with the same name as the writer is a speaker, and rather than following the grand narratives or battle descriptions of war novels, he/she draws everyday anecdotes of U.S. soldiers carefully and thoughtfully.
Many people, various positions, and episodes, ranging from fear before the war to emptiness after the war, such as the hardship of marching with heavy backs every day, fleeing to Canada to escape conscription, telling a true war story, and a man driving back home every day.
Each chapter is read like a short story, but as a whole, it is a feature-length novel in which chapters are written in series with each other, which can be said to be the main characters of a platoon. Tim O'Brien tells a "flying confession" about life and death, memory and imagination, facts and truths, and writing that touches the wounds of war, bringing the dead back into the story without revealing how real and how fictional they are.
