During World War 2, Phillip is separated from his mother when the Germans attack a freight board he was aboard. In the midst of the chaos, Phillip is injured by a loose object and loses his vision. Phillip is fortunate enough to meet an older black man named Timothy, who saves Phillip’s life. Not only does the pair struggle to survive the wreckage, but they also struggle to evade the prejudice and hostility that comes with being “colored.” By enduring “the devil’s tongue,” the duo builds a strong and trusting friendship.
Timothy teaches invaluable lessons to Phillip during their time together. By using his newly acquired knowledge and skills, Phillip is able to survive the ordeal until he is rescued and reunited with his parents.
