About This Book
Tribute to Humanity is Gong Jiyoung's first collection of short stories.
Based on distinguished sensibilities and firm perspectives of reality, this
volume shows the writer's artistry and taste through far more refined structures
than her previously published novels. The nine stories in this work include
"Daybreak" which was published in the 1988 issue of The Quarterly Changbi as
well as " Tribute to Humanity" and "What to Do."
The heroine in the title story, "Tribute to Humanity," undergoes a long,
turbulent transition period and finds a job in a magazine company. Given the
task selecting an interviewee, she has to choose either a prisoner who has been
in jail for 30 years or a female celebrity who is an artist and mediator. The
book explores modern society through the relationship between two sharply
contrasting characters.
"Way of Overcoming Despair" deals with the problems of women, which is one of
the writer's main concerns. Determined to divorce, the heroine collects material
for her magazine article on the reality of the country. Gong Jiyoung's vivid
description of a lively country woman and the impoverished conditions of rural
communities makes interesting reading.
