About This Book
This energetic bildungsroman stars Wandeuk, a seventeen-year-old who,
though from a poor family and no all-A student, is unrivalled at
fistfights. However, the life of this ne’er-do-well troublemaker takes a
dramatic turn when he gets to know "Ddongju," a teacher who gradually
changes from an enemy to a friend. As he learns to express his anger at
the world in learning to kick box and as he learns to express his love
for his mother in seeing her, the unlikely hero experiences emotional
growth.
The greatest strength of this work lies in its capacity to move readers
after splitting their sides with laughter. Consisting of a dwarf father,
a Vietnamese-born mother, and a naive and stuttering fake "uncle,"
Wandeuk’s family could never be welcomed with open arms in reality.
Moreover, the only thing that the protagonist can do is to punch people.
Nevertheless, instead of being disheartened and despairing, he comes to
grasp firmly even the happiness that others, out of fear, have
relinquished without trying. Instead of blindly following predetermined
paths, he seeks and creates his own way by struggling against the world.
Through Wandeuk, who is resilient, optimistic, and impossible not to
love, readers will once again feel the true meaning of the old-fashioned
word "hope."
