About This Book
Where the Clock Hung is Gu’s 8th collection of short stories in addition
to 14 novels, since his debut as a writer in 1987. This collection deals
with birth and extinction as its motif, and provides readers with
introspection into the dark side of their lives.
The title story, “Where the Clock Hung”, is about “ME” who has only
several months to live at the age of 47 and visits his hometown around “MY’s”
birthday. Visiting his hometown is planned because “I” has a vague
memory of “MY’s” birth as his extinction point draws near. As “I”
remembers many aspects of memories of the past, “I” sees illusions of
“MYSELF” being born 47 years ago and growing, and dying there and
illusions of another life being born. This is when “I” realizes that a
life is not just about a birth and extinction, but a part of the
eternity of the universe.
