About This Book
Woman Living Next Door is the second collection of tales by Ha Songnan, and it
gives readers a chance to relish short stories.
In this volume, the writer offers a much more profound reflection on fragmented
city life. In addition to possessing the positive aspects of new-generation
literature as characterized by urbane sentiment and visual images, she follows
the Korean novelistic tradition of showing warm sympathy with life.
The main characters in this volume are a stay-at-home mom, a salesman, a store
watchman, and a chef at a raw-fish restaurant. Having lost their identity, these
modern people have been isolated from the center of urbane culture. In the title
story, “Woman Living Next Door,” a woman loses her memory due to her husband’s
infidelity with a cheerful, attractive woman who lives next door. She is driven
to a desperate situation in which she is on the point of losing her husband and
child to the lady next door.
